Five Basic Views of Hell
- Metaphorical - the belief that those who are wicked will never be redeemed and restored to a place of blessing in eternity, but the scriptural accounts of their suffering and divine judgment are to be taken in a less than literal understanding.
- Purgatorial (Roman Catholic) - the belief that hell is an ante-chamber which is a place of divine cleansing from which some will eventually emerge as redeemed and join those already in heaven.
- Conditional - this belief says that hell is only a temporary situation for people and all will eventually be restored to blessing.
- Annihlation (Jehovah's Witness)- this belief says that the soul is completely destroyed and that is the punishment aspect of hell.
- Orthodox - the belief in a literal hell where the punishment for the wicked is everlasting without the possibility of ever being redeemed.
